This course is designed to instruct property managers in basic concepts and terminology of structural systems and building envelopes so they can better communicate with building engineers and tradespeople. Throughout this course learners will discover types of structural systems in commercial buildings and evaluate their role in ensuring safety and stability. They will also explore the basic principles of structural engineering including key concepts such as load-bearing capacity structural integrity and load distribution as well as different types of structural loads and forces. Learners will also learn the definition of the building envelope and discuss its function in providing structural support and protection against environmental elements. Finally learners will encounter elements that make up the building envelope and explore how they maintain indoor comfort energy efficiency and structural durability.
