This course introduces learners to the functional areas that make up a data center through a 3D virtual tour. It also outlines fundamental concepts related to data centers, and explains their purpose, their sizes, and their role in supporting business operations. The course covers basic design requirements and the four-tier classification system used to describe levels of availability and redundancy. It explains how design elements such as redundancy and fault tolerance contribute to system reliability. It also outlines core infrastructure systems, such as power, cooling, IT hardware, and space planning, and describes how these systems interact. Compliance topics cover United States codes such as the National Electric Code (NEC), and the International Building Code (IBC), along with international standards such as TIA-942, ASHRAE guidelines, and NFPA 75. The course examines operational procedures, safety practices, and physical security systems. It also explores current trends, sustainable practices, and emerging technologies.
